Sign the Petition: No to Trans Mountain (TMX)!

The day after declaring a climate emergency, Trudeau's Liberals announced they're going forward with the Trans Mountain Pipeline Expansion. Flash back to 2015, when then-candidate Terry Beech made the following pledge to his constituents:

“Any major energy project, including Kinder Morgan, must attain the support of the community and partner First Nations, otherwise it won’t proceed.”

This same promise was made by Trudeau. Clearly TMX does not have support of the community, or of the partner First Nations in Burnaby North-Seymour: the Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh. The decision announced today is a total betrayal of that promise made by Beech and Trudeau to the people of Burnaby and Seymour. Not only is the TMX project going ahead, the Liberals spent $4.5 billion of taxpayers’ money to buy it.

Svend Robinson's position is clear:

“It is outrageous that the Liberals will add 14 huge new oil tanks to the same confined land space in a residential area next to an elementary school on Burnaby Mountain, and take onthe risk of a major incident trapping those up at SFU.

There will be a huge increase in tanker traffic from Westridge Terminal, over 400 per year up from recently just over 30 per year.

A major threat of a spill would be catastrophic for our marine environment, the threatened Southern Resident Orca population, and fragile ecosystems such as Maplewood Flats and Cates Park in Seymour.

It would have a devastating impact on the local economy, especially merchants in the Deep Cove area. There are serious concerns about the impact of TMX on human health, as documented by SFU Professor Tim Takaro. And of course there is a totally unacceptable major increase in downstream GHG emissions from this project.”

Tell the Liberals now:

  • Stop the Trans Mountain Pipeline Expansion (TMX),
  • Stop the tank expansion on Burnaby Mountain,
  • Respect free, prior, and informed consent for indigenous nations,
  • No more subsidies to big oil,
  • No new oil and gas projects,
  • We need a New Deal for Canada's environment!
